Makeup wipes that contain microplastics, end up in landfill and clog our sewers. Cotton wool pads that require huge water resources to grow the cotton, and come packaged in plastic. Microfibre face cloths made from polyester, a man-made plastic fibre which sheds plastic into our oceans & rivers with every wash or rinse.
From the day we started the journey of developing CloudCloth, our environmental responsibility was foremost in our thinking. The time for talking is over. Our planet needs action if our children, and our children’s children are to enjoy the opportunities that we owe to them.
CloudCloth® doesn’t absorb cleanser like bulky cloths and flannels, minimising loss of product and ensuring it gets exactly where you want it. The double-sided construction has a dual purpose. Use the soft napped side to massage cleanser into skin, and the woven side to gently exfoliate.
Made with heritage in Manchester, England
Manchester has long been known as Cottonopolis, the beating heart of the UK and world cotton trade in 18th and 19th centuries. So it seemed like the perfect place to start looking when our founder needed to find a special solution to a particular problem.
Whilst suffering from a reactive form of urticaria, resulting in raised red welts on her skin, her usual granular exfoliants were suddenly out of the question.
Muslin cloth seemed like the perfect solution. So our founder set out to see if any of the mills still operating in the UK today were producing it. Surely if she was experiencing this need, others would too? After being turned away from the handful of factories she had found, there was one mill that eventually agreed to a meeting. He presented a number of options but one stood out immediately.
It seemed to offer the perfect solution; it was a very soft, cloud-like fabric, almost like cotton wool, and the back of the cloth was woven like muslin.
The mill owner explained that this type of cloth had been used in skincare many years ago, and that long before disposable wipes exploded onto the market women would keep this same cloth in small circular tins, usually impregnated with a cleansing solution, for quick and easy makeup removal.
This was an amazing discovery, the 'beauty tech' of yesteryear!
Our founder was given some samples to take home and soon found she couldn’t live without it, and it totally replaced the cotton wool rounds she had previously been using and that’s how CloudCloth was born.
Why local matters
Creating locally allows us to have complete control over the quality of the cloth that ends up in your hand.
The British textile industry has had some hard times with stiff competition from Asia and southern Europe, working to help keep those skilled jobs local boosts the economy both here in Manchester & across the country.
Reducing the miles from mill to your bathroom means our carbon footprint is significantly lower and the impact on the planet mimised. Our packaging is also made in the UK (using solar power).
